In a major jolt to the Congress in Uttarakhand, senior Congress leader and Lok Sabha member from Pauri Garhwal seat, Satpal Maharaj severed his ties with the party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. This came in as a shot in the arm for the saffron outfit whose national president Rajnath Singh formally admitted the Congress MP into the BJP fold. Making this announcement at a hurriedly convened press conference here, Singh said that Satyapal Maharaj had been associated with the Congress since 1977 and his decision to seek the membership of the BJP will certainly strengthen the party in the hill state of Uttrakhand.
