Sukma District collector Alex Pal Menon's father in law has said that his son worked for the people of Sukma district, and appealed to Naxals to release him. Police and security analysts point out that the spate of abductions is a sign of desperation on part of the Naxals, frustrated with stepped up security operations in the region. But sources also point to an increasing rift within the red ranks. Alongwith BJD MLA Jhina Hikaka, the abduction of officials in favour with locals, has become a cause of dissent within the naxals. While the current operation is said to have been masterminded by Papa Rao, a local commander belonging to the Andhra and Orissa Committees of the red outfit, the Central Committee has so far refused to issue any statement on the incident.
