India News : Lucknow: As tension brews in Uttar Pradesh over Vishwa Hindu Parishad's proposed 'Chaurasai Kosi Parikrama', former chief minister Kalyan Singh on Thursday slammed the Samajwadi Party for banning the 'yatra'.

Kalyan Singh termed the "84 kosi parikrama" as religious and not political. He also criticised the Samajwadi Party for not giving permission to VHP for the yatra saying that the ruling state government is trying to politicise the issue.

The ex-CM's son had joined the SP government ahead of 2009 Lok Sabha elections and Kalyan Singh had himself extensively campaigned for Mulayam's party.

However, Kalyan, once called a Hindutva mascot, returned to the saffron fold early this year and announced the merger of his Rashtriya Kranti Party (RKP) with the BJP.
