The Supreme Court will today hear the petition by Gujarat government challenging the state High Court order upholding the appointment of Justice RA Mehta as the Lokayukta. The Gujarat government says that the appointment by Governor Kamala Beniwal was unconstitutional and done without the consent of the state government. The High Court on January 18 upheld the appointment of Justice Mehta. It also sharply criticized Chief Minister Narendra Modi for sparking a "constitutional mini crisis" by keeping the Lokayukta office vacant for long. Congress had hailed the 18th January verdict of the Gujarat High Court, saying that the BJP had been exposed. The BJP had vowed to challenge the ruling, saying it infringed the federal structure.
