GUWAHATI: Much before the Congress Working Committee (CWC) met on Tuesday to approve the carving out of the separate state of Telangana from Andhra Pradesh, the Bodos in Assam stepped up their demand for the separate state of Bodoland.

In a coordinated move, the top leadership of the Bodoland People's Front (BPF), which administers the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) and is a part of the Congress-led state government, went to New Delhi to lobby for their cause, while the All Bodo Students Union (Absu) announced a series of steps to press their demand. Absu will start its stir with a 12-hour rail blockade on August 2, followed by a 60-hour Assam bandh from 5am on August 5 to 5pm on August 7 and a 1,000-hour economic blockade after Id.

BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary, who left for New Delhi along with his deputy Kampa Borgoyari and state tourism and transport minister Chandan Brahma, said that the BPF executive council has decided to revive the statehood demand, besides asking for talks for the creation of Bodoland on the lines of Telangana. He said the BTC assembly had already passed a unanimous resolution on February 17, 2010 regarding the creation of Bodoland.
