Mundan or shaving the head is one of the most prominent rituals observed in Hinduism after the death of the elderly family members. Though this ritual is fast disappearing in most Hindu communities, a few communities still hold on to this practice firmly till date. We can cite several reasons as to why this is advocated after death.

Hair removal is a sign of purification observance that the male family members especially those performing the last rites are expected to undergo. This act prepares them both physically and mentally to perform the customary last rites.
