Gasoline consumption per car decreases to lowest in 12 years

The amount of gasoline consumed per car in Korea has dropped to its lowest in 12 years. Car owners in Korea spent an average of 1-thousand-6-hundred U.S. dollars on gasoline last year.
According to the Korea Petroleum Association, the amount of gasoline consumed per car last year was 1-thousand-1-hundred-60 liters on average. This is a 2-point-4 percent decrease from the previous year, and is the lowest figure since 2006.
Although the number of gasoline-run vehicles has increased steadily, the amount of gasoline consumed by each vehicle has decreased. Looking back at the years 2018 and 2017, the number of gasoline-run vehicles increased by 2-point-5 percent, but total gasoline consumption only increased by 0-point-1 percent.
This can be explained by improvements in fuel efficiency from new car models, but also because higher gasoline prices have reduced the amount of people driving their cars.
An official from the Korea Petroleum Association said that as the price of gasoline will rise again this year due to the rising oil prices, gasoline consumption will continue to decrease.
