Measles Outbreaks
Prompts Possible
Vaccination Bill in WA Clark County representative
Monica Stonier is co-sponsoring
the proposed bill. Under it, parents cannot cite
philosophical or personal
reasons as exemptions for
leaving their child unvaccinated. Medical and religious
reasons would still be
allowed as exemptions. Only 78% of Clark County
kids between the ages of six
and eighteen have received
their measles vaccine. WA Governor Jay Inslee
has declared a state of
emergency for the region following
56 cases of the infectious disease. Parents who choose not to vaccinate
their children do so out of fear it will
cause both physical and behavioral reactions. Doctors contend that the vaccine
is "highly effective" and that the
benefits "greatly outweigh the risks." Measles was once considered
eradicated in the U.S.
