Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is considered to be the holiest place by the Hindu followers as it is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva. Watch this video to get information about this holy pilgrimage site.

1 Omkareshwar Mahadev Temple at Shivapuri, Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines. This revered Shiva temple stands on a sacred island in the Narmada River.
2 This island appears is in the shape of Om - a divine Hindu symbol. The island got its form due to the two lofty Mandata hills that were divided by the valleys.
3 Amareshwar or Mamleshwar is another Jyotirlinga temple that is located nearby and has many popular beliefs related to it.
4 According to the mythological legend, King Mandhata of the Ikshvaku clan worshiped Lord Shiva here with severe austerities. The appeased Lord Shiva manifested himself as a Jyotirlinga and stayed here forever.
5 Another profound legend states that the ruler of Vindyachal mountain was a devout follower of Lord Shiva.
6 He created a Lingam on an Om shaped mud mound and worshiped it as a representative of Shiva. Lord Shiva was so pleased that he appeared in two forms.
7 Further, the Shiva-Linga split into two on the request of Hindu gods, the upper half being Amaleshwar and the other Omkareshwar. Hence, both of them are equally revered at this divine place.
8 Along with the presiding deities of different Hindu gods, there is a cave just below the Shiva temple dedicated to Sri Adi Shankaracharya. It is said that Adi Shankaracharya met his Guru Govindapada in this cave.
9 The Mahashivaratri festival is the biggest celebration of this temple when millions of visitors from around the world come here.
