One day, there was a lot of chaos in the three worlds. Devas from the heaven, Daityas in the netherlands and Manavas from the earth, none of them were content.

Lord Brahma grew very sad to see that there was no solution to this disorder.

Hence the lord decided to instruct everyone and just said one word, but with a great thunder. It was ‘Da.’

The gods, the humans and the demons individually asked Lord Brahma what it meant. Lord Brahma explained to the gods that;

For Devas, ‘Da’ decodes into Damyata (to restrain or moderation.) The Devas are always involved in heavenly pleasures and their cravings only grow. On keeping a control over it, they wouldn’t have to resort happiness.

Then, the human for whom ‘Da’ indicates Dana or Datta which is generosity. Brahma taught the Manavas to give up their greedy nature and make charity.

Everything they get does not belong, but their nature agitates them to store everything but they need to share it to achieve happiness.

At last, for Daityas, ‘Da’ was nothing but Dayadhvam (Daya) which means showing mercy and compassion towards every that comes in their way.

The desire to dominate everything provokes them to kill and destroy everything and that needs to be kept in check to find happiness.

Till date Lord Brahma’s instruction can be heard as the loud “Da” in the thunder with which he reminds us of our duties.
