Samudra Manthan or Ksheera Sagara Mathanam is one of the most famous episodes in the Hindu scriptures.

Samudra Manthan is the only event recorded in scriptures, where the Devas (demigods) and Asuras (demons) worked together.

According to Hindu mythology, this event marks the origin of Amrita, the nectar or drink of immortality.

During this time, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Kurma (a tortoise) to support the Mandara mountain from skidding in the ocean.

From the churning, many objects came into existence and the first one was Halahala or Kalakuta that represented the ocean's impurities.

Lord Shiva drank to save the creation and Goddess Parvati had clutched his neck in an effort to stop the poison from going down his throat.

Hereafter, Lord Shiva was known by the name Neelkanth, as his throat had turned blue because of the poison.

There are fourteen heavenly things believed to have arisen from the ocean which included;

Chandra, Parijat, Airavat, Kamadhenu or Surabhi, Uchhaishravas, Sankha, Gada, Laxmi, Apsara, Kaustubha, Kalpavriksha, Dhanwantari, Sharanga and Amrit.
