Huawei accused of plagiarising music video in tablet advert

SHENZHEN, GUANGDONG — Huawei is being accused of plagiarising a YouTube music video for an advert of their MediaPad M3 Lite, reports Engadget.

As if having their CFO arrested in a foreign country for violating sanctions against Iran wasn't enough publicity, Huawei also decided to dabble in a bit of plagiarism.

Back in 2014, musician Nigel Stanford posted an elaborate music video showing multiple copies of himself playing instruments that make fire, water, table salt, move to the beat of different audio frequencies. At one point Stanford walks around a Tesla coil wearing chainmail.

The video gained traction in YouTube, racking over 24 million views on YouTube to date. Pretty cool right? Huawei thought so as well. In fact, the video is so great that the tech company decided to make its own version of it years later to promote their MediaPad M3 Lite.

Only their version had scenes that were almost identical to the original video, some of which can obviously be seen in this side-by-side comparison Stanford shared on his Facebook page. According to Stanford, not only were the shots surprisingly similar but the choice in music — which Stanford had composed for his video — was similar as well.

Since these allegations were made, Huawei has removed their video from their YouTube channel and reportedly told Engadget that they're "looking into this matter and will share further updates in due course."
