Report: Kushner 'Pushed' Trump Toward Deal To End Shutdown

The New York Times reported on Jared Kushner's role in the deal to end the shutdown.

The New York Times has reported on senior White House adviser Jared Kushner's role in the short-term deal to reopen the government without getting money for President Trump's border wall plan.
According to the Times, the move was "a stunning setback for the president and for Mr. Kushner, who had told colleagues that public opinion would move to their side and that Speaker Nancy Pelosi would emerge as the one who looked unreasonable and intransigent."
The Washington Post reports that Kushner is also said to have believed he could strike a deal with some Democrats, with unnamed insiders attributing Trump's offer for temporary protections to so-called "Dreamers" in exchange for border wall funding to the president's son-in-law.
Kushner "ultimately pushed Mr. Trump toward the announcement he made on Friday, supporting it as a way to buy more time" to secure wall funding, notes the Times, citing sources.
Despite the wide view that the administration lost the battle over the partial shutdown, Trump has indicated that his fight for a wall is not over.
"I wish people would read or listen to my words on the Border Wall," he tweeted Friday. "This was in no way a concession. It was taking care of millions of people who were getting badly hurt by the Shutdown with the understanding that in 21 days, if no deal is done, it's off to the races!"
And he tweeted the next day: "21 days goes very quickly. Negotiations with Democrats will start immediately. Will not be easy to make a deal, both parties very dug in. The case for National Security has been greatly enhanced by what has been happening at the Border & through dialogue. We will build the Wall!"
