President Trump is said to have mocked his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, about becoming an "expert" on immigration in forty-eight hours during a recent Oval Office meeting. The Washington Post reports the comment came after Kushner explained policy and offered suggestions about coming to a compromise with Democrats over the partial government shutdown. According to three people "familiar with the exchange," Trump said, "Apparently, Jared has become an expert on immigration in the last 48 hours."  One of the individuals who spoke to the Post described the comment as "playful."  Notably, Kushner has reportedly been encouraging Trump to "dig in while also adjusting his position as his popularity suffers in public polls" and is "convinced that Senate Democrats will eventually crack and that there are votes for a bipartisan agreement."  Two bills that take different paths to bring the shutdown to an end are expected to be put up for Senate votes on Thursday, reports the New York Times. One includes the $5.7 billion Trump is demanding for the wall along the US-Mexico border, while the other consists of no wall money and calls for the government to be reopened through February 8.  Neither is expected to pass, but it is hoped that the vote will spark efforts to come to a bipartisan solution.
