Month long ban on alcohol to curb rape of minors - Bolivia

Residents of Bolivian town of La Asunta have imposed a month long ban on consumption of alcohol in a bid to stop the rape of their children.

The residents say they refuse to stand by and do nothing as their children are assaulted.

The father of an 11 year old girl who was raped claims the police are corrupt and demand bribes to take action.

One mother said that if her child is raped, "I would buy 20 litres of alcohol and set the offender on fire because there is no justice."

The residents have therefore taken to riding in the back of police vehicles and ensuring for themselves that there is no alcohol being sold in the Bolivian town.

They have also set a 10pm curfew for minors and are considering extending the 'dry month.'
