Former Nissan chief denied bail in Japan

Former Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn has been denied a second request for release on bail from Tokyo’s Detention Centre in Japan on January 22, 2019.
The Tokyo District Court did not immediately provide an explanation for the ruling, but when his first bail request was turned down last week, judges cited concerns about Ghosn being a flight risk. The Brazilian-born businessman, who also has French and Lebanese nationality, has been detained since November 19, 2018.
Ghosn is accused of falsifying financial reports and breach of trust related to under-reporting of his compensation from Nissan Motor Co. He has denied wrongdoing.
Ghosn’s case has drawn attention to Japan’s so-called “hostage justice”, a practice which reportedly involves suspects being held for months before trial, especially when they assert they are innocent.
