The citizenship bill lead to a heated debate in parliament with congress and TMC raising objections over the JPC report. Rajnath Singh defended the bill specifying that it is not just for Assam but other states too. This, as protests continued to rage in Assam against bill. The all Assam students union along with 30 other organisations have called for a state-wide shutdown after the cabinet approved changes in the bill. The Asom Gana Parishad has withdrawn from the alliance with BJP as it failed to convince the centre that the bill would nullify the ongoing updating of NRC. BJP's alliance partner says the bill goes against the basic principles of the 1985 Assam accord.
