Barrie Benson Made Every Inch Of This Beautiful Home Kid-Proof

Just outside of architect Lindsay Hance McCullough’s kitchen, where her young children routinely do homework and have snacks, hangs an original work by Donald Judd. In the foyer, a primary-colored Alexander Calder is offset by a cerulean vintage Edward Wormley chair. “Since my first job in San Francisco, I’ve had my eye out,” says McCullough. “Start collecting early! If you love it, you’ll always find a place for it in your home.” Her passion for modern art and Antiques Roadshow–worthy furniture has hardly been dampened by the addition of three kids: “You have to use your things. I don’t want anything to be too precious.” This message was heard loud and clear by Barrie Benson, the designer McCullough hired to resuscitate the staid 1939 Georgian Revival brick home she and her husband purchased in her hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina.
