A sick toddler whose Yemeni mother had struggled to get a U.S. visa due to President Trump's travel ban has died.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations made the announcement Friday, writing in a news release that "Abdullah Hassan, the 2-year-old son of Shaima Swileh and Ali Hassan, has passed away at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in Oakland."
The release goes on to explain that the boy and his father, both U.S. citizens, went to California months ago to receive treatment for the boy's degenerative brain condition, but the mother is a Yemeni national who was only able to get a visa waiver to visit her son on December 18th after a lawsuit was filed and the media got involved.
The two-year-old was reportedly already on life support by the time she arrived, notes CNN.
Ali Hassan has since released a statement about his son's death.
"We are heartbroken. We had to say goodbye to our baby, the light of our lives," he said. "We want to thank everyone for your love and support at this difficult time. We ask you to kindly keep Abdullah and our family in your thoughts and prayers."
