Why Is Giving Birth in the US
so Deadly? Despite medical advances, the American rate of maternal death is
curiously high. The rate is about about 14 deaths for every 100,000 live births, higher than much of the developed world. African-American women are three times more likely to die of pregnancy-related complications. According to the CDC, over 60% of maternal deaths are preventable. William Callaghan, CDC chief of maternal and infant health, via National Geographic Research suggests that "weathering," the accumulated stresses from racial bias, contributes to the high maternal death rate for women of color. Unconscious bias can also affect the level of care women receive. More health care support during pregnancy and delivery is a proposed solution to help lower U.S. maternal mortality rates.
