The death toll of a volcano-triggered tsunami in Indonesia rose to 222 and the number of injured reached at least 843, the disaster management agency said on Sunday.

The Anak Krakatau volcano, or the Child of Krakatoa volcano in English, erupted on Saturday, causing underwater landslides, which, in turn, raised the sea level on Saturday night, according to the Indonesian meteorology and geophysics agency.

The tsunami destroyed 556 houses, nine hotels and 360 ships in the hardest-hit district of Pandeglang, Serang of Banten province and Lampung Selatan district of Lampung province, said spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho of the national disaster management agency.

The local authorities dispatched heavy machinery and equipment to the affected areas to help in the search and rescue operations, said Sutopo.
