The Evolution of Angela Bassett

From housing projects, to Yale, to an entertainment icon, here's how Angela Bassett forged her legacy in film and television.

Bassett is one of the celebrities who has changed the game for Black entertainment and entertainment in general. The award-winning actress and wife of actor Courtney B. Vance, got her big break in “Boyz n the Hood” and then went on to become the queen of biopics.

Bassett stars in “What's Love Got to Do With It” alongside Laurence Fishburne as Tina Turner. Her portrayal of Tina Turner was a pivotal moment for the actress, who has also played Rosa Parks and Coretta Scott King during her career. Interviews, as well as her many iconic roles, all showcase how talented she is and how she is changing, not just Black entertainment, but also Hollywood as a whole.

More recently, Bassett has found a home with Ryan Murphy and his anthology series “American Horror Story.” She is featured in several of the show’s seasons with stars like Lady Gaga, including “AHS Coven” (as Marie Laveau) and “AHS Apocalypse.” But Bassett really broke barriers with her role as Queen Mother of Wakanda in Marvel's “Black Panther.” She has also starred in the new “Mission: Impossible Fallout” movie.
