A Syrian national has been sentenced to three years in prison for inviting people to join a terrorist group.
The 33-year-old, whose name was withheld, faces a charge of violating the Anti-Terrorism Act for the Protection of Citizens and Public Security, according to Incheon District Court.
The judge announced the verdict, saying the suspect actively encouraged people to join the Islamic State online by posting videos and texts on his Facebook account and providing secret chat links with ISIS militants.
The justice department said they found evidence on his smartphone, such as posters related to ISIS and a list of Europeans who had sworn allegiance to the terror group.
The team of judges said if such cases were overlooked, it may foster terrorism and harm public security.
The defendant said he will appeal the verdict.
This is the first time a suspect has been found guilty of such a charge since the Act came into effect in March 2016.
Violation of the Act may result in up to five years in prison.
The suspect fled Syria's civil war in 2007 seeking asylum in South Korea, but his application was denied, and he was instead granted a temporary humanitarian stay visa.
He has been working at a junkyard in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi-do Province since and was arrested by the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency international crime unit in July.
