New Gene Therapy Treatment Reverses Sickle Cell Anemia

According to UPI.com, early trial results show that a new gene therapy for sickle cell anemia holds promise in reversing the conditions symptoms.
The researchers presented their work on Monday at the American Society of Hematology’s annual meeting. Professor Punam Malik of the Pediatrics Department at the University of Cincinatti said the result “… includes near elimination of chronic pain and sickling events and improved anemia.”
SCA is an inherited disease that develops when blood cells form a sickle shape causing them to get stuck in the person's vascular system. It can lead to vital organ damage and death.
