President Trump has indicated that he thinks special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe has benefited him politically.
According to the Washington Post, Trump is quoted as saying about the investigation: "I think it makes my base stronger. I would have never said this to you. But I think the level of love now is far greater than when we won. I don't know, what do you think, Mike?"
Vice President Mike Pence reportedly replied, "As strong or stronger."
The Post says their comments were made during an Oval Office interview on September 20 with former Trump campaign officials Corey R. Lewandowski and David N. Bossie whose new book "Trump's Enemies: How the Deep State Is Undermining the Presidency" is set to be released Tuesday.
The sentiment shared by Trump and Pence was, in fact, echoed in a New York Times op-ed from last October which says that despite Mueller's indictments of former Trump associates Paul Manafort and George Papadopoulos, "Mr. Trump's supporters will stand by their man. After all, they've stood by him through worse, through events and allegations that implicate Mr. Trump himself."
As for the probe itself, attorneys for the president have confirmed that he recently submitted written answers about Russia and the 2016 election to Mueller's team, notes the Associated Press.
