'Transparent' Creator Jill Soloway on Their New Book and Consent

Jill Soloway, creator and director of “Transparent,” is addressing society’s issue with consent in their new book titled, “She Wants It: Desire, Power, and Toppling the Patriarchy.”

“I’ve been thinking about consent for a really long time and about this very same question: How does consent relate to gender?” they explained. “This is a huge piece of information, especially for women and girls who are starting to recognize that their gender actually gets in the way of them being believed.”

Soloway said that once they identified as queer, they noticed that queer, non-binary, and trans people have more conversations before sex that lead to more consenting situations.

“Straight people, sort of, assume that the guy’s gonna take the lead,” they said. “You need to actually have the conversation about the fact that you like to use power in sex, rather than just overpower somebody and see what happens.”

When asked how they want to change the way society perceives trans people, queer people, and non-gendered individuals, they said, they’re not trying to get rid of masculinity or femininity.

“I think there can be tons of masculinity —über masculinity — just don’t associated with a male body,” Soloway said. “People can be super femmes, super female — just don’t expect a female body.”
