Study: Social Media Can Make Users Feel Lonely Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania have confirmed a "casual link between time spent on social media and decreased well-being." According to the researchers, this is the first time a casual connection has been proven. The team recruited 143 undergraduate students to complete a mental well-being survey. Participants had to submit screenshots of their iPhones' battery life for three weeks. There was a control group that kept their current social media behavior The other group was experimental and limited their time on platforms to 10 minutes per platform per day. Those who spent less time on Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat showed "significant reductions in loneliness." There have been multiple studies looking into the effects of social media on users' mental health.
