South Korea is expected to announce this month that it's disbanding a controversial organization funded by Japan... for the victims of Japan's past sexual enslavement of Korean women.
This is according to senior official at Seoul's foreign ministry who said Friday that the legislative work to disband the so-called Reconciliation and Healing Foundation is likely to take 6 months to a year.
The official said the South Korean government will also continue discussions about what to do with the roughly 8-point-7 million U.S. dollars in Japanese funding.
The foundation is the result of a 2015 agreement between Seoul and Tokyo to compensate Korean women sexually enslaved by the Japanese military during World War Two.
But the foundation never actually started running, since many surviving victims rejected the agreement as a failure by Japan to take full legal responsibility.
