Congo's Ebola outbreak is the worst in its history

BENI, CONGO — The latest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is expected to last until mid-2019.

The outbreak in the country's North Kivu Province has already killed more than 200 people, reports CNBC.

Ebola commonly affects humans and nonhuman primates, and is caused by an infection with a group of viruses within the genus Ebolavirus, according to the CDC.

The disease spread extensively in the town of Beni in North Kivu Province due to the dense local population, but also because of "tradi-modern" health centers, which patients tend to visit even though they aren't regulated.

These health centers reportedly didn't have running water for handwashing, and patients would reuse needles to inject medicine.

The WHO told reporters it will be "at least another six months" before they can declare the Ebola outbreak over, according to NBC News.

This is the tenth Ebola virus epidemic the Democratic Republic of Congo has faced since its first epidemic back in 1976.
