The BMW i3 is often a B-class, high-roof hatchback manufactured and marketed by BMW through an electric powertrain using rear wheel drive by way of a single-speed transmission and including an underfloor Li-ion power supply. BMW added the sportier i3s to the 2018 model year. The i3 and i3s are offered with the optional range-extending gasoline engine. The i3 was BMW's first mass-produced zero emissions vehicle and premiered as part of BMW's electric vehicle sub-brand, BMW i. Styled by Richard Kim, the i3 is marketed a single five-door configuration recognized for its two smaller clamshell rear-hinged rear doors. The i3 debuted as being a concept with the 2011 International Motor Show Germany, and production began in July 2013 in Leipzig, Germany. As of December 2016, the i3 ranked because world's third top selling all-electric car in the past with more than 65,000 units sold since its inception.
