Numerous cat mummies and cat statues have been found by archaeologists excavating a site at Egypt's Saqqara Necropolis, reports Ahram Online.
An announcement was made by the Ministry of Antiquities on Facebook Saturday in a post stating, the mission had uncovered "three plain New Kingdom tombs that had been used during the Late Period as cats necropolis."
A necropolis is typically considered to be an ancient burial ground or cemetery.
And the Late Period designation suggests the tombs are likely more than 2,300 years old, since the era is said to have occurred around 525 to 332 BCE.
The post goes on to say that "tens of cat mummies were also unearthed along with 100 wooden gilded statues of cats and a bronze one dedicated to the cat goddess Bastet."
Along with the cat artifacts, four Old Kingdom tombs and statues depicting other animals including a cow and lion were also found.
