Earth’s ozone layer is healing says UN

Since the 1980's scientists around the world have been looking up at our skies with deepening concern. Unseen, a layer of ozone encircles Earth's stratosphere protecting us from most of the harmful effects of ultraviolet light from the sun. Ozone is a colourless combination of three oxygen atoms kilometres above Earth's surface, it shields us from ultraviolet rays which cause skin cancer, crop damage and other problems. Use of man-made chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which release chlorine and bromine, began eating away at the ozone leaving a big hole. The hole reaches its peak in September and October and disappears by late December until the next Southern Hemisphere spring. CFCs were widely used as refrigerants, as propellants for aerosols, and as solvents for dry cleaning.
