President Trump, in an interview with Axios broadcast Sunday on HBO, said, “I’m basically a nice person, I hope.”

President Trump, in an interview with 'Axios on HBO' broadcast Sunday, said, "I'm basically a nice person, I hope." The preceding discussion was about his attacks on the press, and, in particular, his characterization of them as the "enemy of the people."  When pressed on why he uses that language, Trump replied: "All I'm doing is fighting back against false stories...If they would write accurately about me, I'd be the nicest president you've ever seen."  "It would be much easier...for me...because I'm basically a nice person, I hope," the president further noted. Trump defended his "enemy of the people" characterization earlier in the interview as well. He stated: "I think I'm doing a service [by attacking the press] when people write stories about me that are so wrong."
In his push to discredit the mainstream media, Trump has made similar comments before.
Back in July, he said during a speech in Kansas City: "Stick with us. Don't believe the crap you see from these people, the fake news...What you're seeing and what you're reading is not what's happening."
The media has also been among Trump's favorite Twitter targets.
Just days ago, he wrote: "There is great anger in our Country caused in part by inaccurate, and even fraudulent, reporting of the news. The Fake News Media, the true Enemy of the People, must stop the open & obvious hostility & report the news accurately & fairly. That will do much to put out the flame."  Another tweet on the topic stated: "I just cannot state strongly enough how totally dishonest much of the Media is. Truth doesn't matter to them, they only have their hatred & agenda. This includes fake books, which come out about me all the time, always anonymous sources, and are pure fiction. Enemy of the People!"
