Lucy McBath Is Turning a Mother's Pain into Politics

Lucy McBath’s son was a victim of gun violence. Now she’s running for U.S. Congress to fight for national gun reform.

“I was just a suburban mother, raising my son Jordan when he was unnecessarily killed in Jacksonville, simply for playing loud music in his car,” she stated. “The gun culture has become so extremist that there are no safe spaces anymore.”

McBath became the national spokesperson for Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. She also urged lawmakers around the country to reform gun safety laws.

McBath is now running to represent Georgia’s 6th congressional district.

“I come from a family that’s steeped in the civil rights movement. My parents were both civil rights leaders. I grew up marching in the rallies with my parents,” she stated. “So this is really just part of my DNA. I think this is just who I always was but there was a sense of dormancy. It was laying dormant until Jordan was murdered and then all of my life experiences have culminated into the person that I have become now.”
