A lifetime spent among the griffon vultures of northern Spain

Santa Cilia de Panzano, Aug 20 (EFE).- (Camera: Angel Herrera) Manuel Aguilera has been coming up to feed the vultures of the mountains above Santa Cilia de Panzano, a cluster of houses on a hilltop, since the 1970s at least. As a child, he would watch his grandfather feed and care for the creatures at a time when, according to him, they were seen as pests that had to be eradicated.

His time with them has afforded him a huge familiarity with the carrion-eaters. Some of them have been coming to eat with him for decades, and there’s a handful he knows well enough to name. Now, he invites tourists to watch.
