US Towns Are Making it Illegal for Teenagers to Go Trick-or-Treating The town of Chesapeake, Virginia has banned anyone over the age of 12 from seeking candy on Halloween. City officials say perpetrators could face a misdemeanor charge, up to six months in jail and $25 to $100 fines. Overall, nine towns in Virginia have made it illegal for teens to trick-or-treat. Other towns in Mississippi,
South Carolina and Maryland also
have set the cutoff age at 12. Last year Bathrust, Canada banned anyone older than 16. The age limits, along with measures like curfews, are part of a broader push to limit pranks and vandalism. Officials say they won’t be actively looking to catch teenage trick-or-treaters in the act.
