Korean retailers unveil robots that can replace shop workers
  • 6 years ago
Robots are becoming a more common sight at fast food restaurants, convenience stores and supermarkets amid a global race to automate stores.
Park Se-young has more.
At this convenience store, a robot greets customers at the checkout counter.
It even recognizes returning customers.

"Nice to see you again. You know the payment options, right?"

The robot converses with customers while they make their payments.

"Through emotional communication, it may help robots exist alongside humans."

A robot is in charge of the international food section at this supermarket.
It provides product information and an automated concierge service to shoppers.

"It used to be difficult for customers to get information about unfamiliar products on the spot. The robot provides both product information and suggestions."

These technologies won't be commercialized immediately, but retailers are racing to automate their stores, …in part due to the government's push to increase the minimum hourly wage.
