The 2018 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Congolese gynecologist Denis (Moo-gwei-gay) Mukwege and Yazidi human rights activist Nadia Murad for their efforts to end sexual violence in armed conflicts.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee said it awarded the pair for helping bring attention and raise awareness of "how women, who constitute half of the population in most communities, actually are used as a weapon of war" and that they need protection.
(Moo-gwei-gay)Mukwege has treated thousands of women suffering from complicated injuries caused by gang rape and from his hospital near the Rwandan border, he has performed life-saving surgeries on women who fell victim of soldiers or armed rebels.
Murad, herself a victim of war crimes, was recognized for her refusal to stay silent, and has shown enormous courage in recounting her own suffering from Islamic State militants and speaking up on behalf of other victims.
