Steve Bannon said that Michael Avenatti, who is perhaps best known as the lawyer for adult film actress Stormy Daniels, could be a strong Democratic presidential contender in 2020.
During an interview on HBO's 'Real Time With Bill Maher' Friday, host Bill Maher asked the former White House chief strategist about his thoughts on potential candidates including Avenatti, and Bannon said, "If Bernie Sanders had an ounce of Avenatti's fearlessness, he would've been the Democratic nominee, and we would have had a much tougher time beating him."
Bannon then said of Avenatti, "He's got a fearlessness and is a fighter...I think he'll go through a lot of this field if he decides to stick with it--like a scythe through grass."
"Now, I don't happen to think a professional politician--'cause I think we're in a new age...is going to be there at the end of the day. I've always said it's going to be someone like Oprah, or an Avenatti, or somebody that's more media-savvy is going to be there," Bannon further noted.
He isn't the only political observer making a case for a possible run by Avenatti. Recent columns in The Week and The New York magazine both suggest he may be a formidable presence in 2020, in large part, due to his outspoken, media-savvy persona.
Avenatti appears to be aware of his rising political profile, telling the Washington Post of Republicans, "They recognize perhaps they have a problem on their hands, and I happen to agree with them. If I decide to do this, I'm going to surprise a lot of people."
However, it seems he is still undecided, with the Post reporting that the lawyer "goes through periods where a run either attracts him or repulses him."
