South Korea remains opposed to hoisting of Japan's wartime Rising Sun Flag during naval event
  • 6 years ago
The South Korean Navy will continue to discuss with Japan over the flying of a controversial imperialistic flag on a Japanese vessel that's due to take part in an international naval event in waters around Jeju Island this month.
Seoul's foreign ministry also says it has communicated with Tokyo over the issue.
It explained Japan needs to proactively consider the public sentiment Koreans have over the Rising Sun Flag,... which is viewed as an emblem of Japan's wartime aggression and imperialism.
Seoul's request has so far been rejected by Japan,... based on the reasoning that ships for the country's Maritime Self-Defense Force are required by law to fly the flag.
