In the Hindu tradition, cows are honored, garlanded and given special feedings at festivals all over India. Honoring the cow inspires in people the virtues of gentleness and connects them with nature. The cow gives milk and cream, yogurt and cheese, butter and ice cream, and ghee. The milk of a cow is believed to refine a person. The ghee (clarified butter) from the milk is used in ceremonies and in preparing religious food. Cow dung is used as fertilizer, as a fuel and as a disinfectant in homes.
हिन्दू धर्म में गाय एक महत्वपूर्ण स्थान रखती है, हिन्दू धर्म में गाय को मां और देवी का स्थान प्राप्त है। पुराणों के अनुसार गाय में सभी देवताओं का वास है। हिन्दु्ओं के लिए गाय सबसे पवित्र पशु है। माना जाता है कि गाय माता जिस जगह खड़ी रहकर आनंदपूर्वक चैन की सांस ले लेती है। वहां का वास्तु दोष स्वत: ही समाप्त हो जाता है।
