President Moon embarks on three-day trip to Pyeongyang for summit
  • 6 years ago
Only one place to start this morning -- and that's the big summit.
The first-day of the three day trip by President Moon Jae-in to the North Korean capital of Pyeongyang,… begins in the coming hours.
President Moon will be flying off to Pyeongyang shortly with a monumental task ahead of him.
We get the latest from the main press center at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza where our Shin Se-min joins us live.
Se-min, give us a rundown of the president's schedule.

Take-off is set for 8-40 this morning, so in a couple of hours, we should see President Moon making his way to Seoul Airport,... a base that's used as a VIP airfield by South Korean leaders on trips like this.
The president and some one-hundred other officials will land around an hour and 20 minutes later at Sunan International Airport in Pyeongyang, at 10 AM.
Mark and as for live broadcasting the event,... we have no guarantees we'll be able to see the welcoming event in Pyeongyang,... but we will be able to follow the president making his way to the airport in Seoul.
And so we won't know whether the first meet-and-greet by the leaders in the North Korean capital will be at the airport,… so we should keep a close eye on it.
Over the next three-days,... the leaders are likely to have at least two meetings and their first meeting will take place today,… right after a luncheon.
It's quite a contrast to the previous Pyeongyang summits in 2000 and 2007,… where the leaders first held their meeting on day-two, after being greeted by high ranking North Korean official, but not then-North Korean leader Kim Jong-il himself.

Se-min, President Moon's chief of staff did reveal some of the details of the president's trip,…. but it wasn't as specific as many had hoped.
Do we know where the leaders will be holding their first summit in Pyeongyang?

You're right on that. The head of the summit preparatory committee Im Jong-seok told reporters here what the president's three-day trip would entail.
Here's a bit of that presser that shows there's still a degree of uncertainty in Seoul.

"If the summit goes smoothly, we can cautiously assume there will be a joint press conference,… announcing the contents the leaders have agreed."

This is a clear indication the Pyeongyang trip is still in the making-- in terms of the specific details as to where the leaders will be holding their first summit, or what they'll do to show the world their friendly relations.
As for the possible location of the summit though,... two places have been identified as the most likely spots,... the Baekhwawon State Guesthouse, where previous inter-Korean summits have taken place,.. and the head office of North Korea's Workers' Party, where Kim has his own office.
