Thai authorities' rescue of monitor lizard appears heavy-handed

Questions have been raised after a video showed Thai authorities hurling a monitor lizard over a wall after it wandered onto a busy motorway.

The reptile was seen on the highway in the Din Daneg area of Bangkok, Thailand, last Friday.

Rescue workers arrived and snared the animal with a lasso before lifting it in the air and throwing it unceremoniously over the edge of the raised road into bushes.

The treatment of the animal in the video appears overly rough but authorities said the animal was completely unharmed and had been saved from certain death.

Volunteer animal handler Khun Nakorn said: ''There were a lot of cars and the lizard could have caused an accident. It had to be dealt with quickly. We had to get it off the road. It wasn't injured.''
