Pope Francis Makes Appeal To Sicily’s Mafia

On Saturday, Pope Francis appealed to members of the mafia on the Italian island of Sicily to abandon a life of crime and violence. In the Sicilian capital, the Pope said organized crime members - many of whom go to church - “cannot believe in God and be Mafiosi” at the same time. According to Reuters, Francis was in the city of Palermo to commemorate Father Giuseppe “Pino” Puglisi, a priest killed by the mafia in 1993 because he challenged its control over one of the city’s neighborhoods.
