ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO — Officials in New Mexico are urging patients who have received "vampire facials" to get tested, reports ABC 7 News.
The news comes after a client of the spa developed an infection, leading to an investigation of the salon.
A "vampire facial" is a skin care treatment in which a patient's blood is drawn then reapplied to the patient's face.
The procedure gained popularity when socialite, reality television star, and nude-selfie extraordinaire Kim Kardashian instagrammed herself getting it done.
Officials reportedly found the salon had problems with storing, handling and disposing needles.
The health officials suspect one way the infection might have spread is through "needle stick-associated transmission," which is a fancy way of saying infected needles.
Health officials are urging anyone who received the procedure at the VIP Spa to get tested for HIV, and Hepatitis B and C.
The beauty procedure is advertised as a way to improve skin health, reduce wrinkles and sun damage, with apparently the possible side effects of contracting the HIV virus and liver disease.
