CHENNAI: With the Lok Sabha elections just eight months away and by elections to the assembly segments of Thiruparankundram and Tiruvarur, likely to be announced earlier, the AIADMK seems to have opted for an anti-BJP stand. The spiralling petroleum prices seem to have come in handy for the ruling party, which not too long ago seemed to back the Modi government. AIADMK minister attacked the BJPled government at the Centre for turning a blind eye to sky-rocketing petroleum prices and its refusal to bring it under the purview of GST. “It is a fact that there are no scams now unlike the case of the earlier ‘kadharregime’ (Congress-led UPA). But now, people are not even able to live in peace, especially with rising petroleum prices making the life of common people miserable. Its refusal to reduce excise duty and control the falling rupee are creating more problems by impacting industries and resulting in employment reduction,” Namadhu Amma said. “When people like Pon Radhakrishnan, a Union minister, attack the AIADMK over non-existent scams like procurement of eggs for noon-meal scheme, do you expect the party organ to keep quiet,” asked AIADMK spokesman C Ponnaiyan. Fisheries minister D Jayakumar too has been evading a direct response on the possibility of Prime Minister Narendra Modi attending the MGR Centenary celebration scheduled for September 30 in Chennai. “Only the party leadership can decide on inviting national leaders for the meeting,” Jayakumar has been saying for the past two days
