Bird eagerly gives big buffalo full facial cleaning

Tourists were fascinated by the sight of a small bird cleaning the face of a buffalo bull.

The footage, filmed on August 30 in Kruger National Park, shows an oxpecker bird picking the forehead and nostrils of a buffalo as the mammal remains still.

The filmer writes: ''The buffalo understands the benefits of this bird and happily tolerates it.

''It is amazing to see and understand that there is always a purpose for everything living in the African bush.''

Oxpecker birds live in association with medium to large mammalian herbivores.

The smallest hosts range from warthogs to impala and the largest to rhino, hippo and buffalo.

These birds spend their daylight hours picking and consuming parasites out of the pelage of their hosts.
