Thousands of stranded passengers and airport employees queue for shuttle services out of Kansai Airport island

Authorities began shuttling passengers and employees out of the Kansai Airport island on September 5, following the shutdown of the busy transport hub after a 2,500-tonne tanker slammed into the bridge that links the offshore island to the mainland.

This video, filmed at 7 pm by Harry Creo that day, shows crowds lined up for buses. According to him, many were in line for at least eight hours.

At least eleven people have been killed and about 600 injured after Typhoon Jebi ripped through western Japan, the most powerful storm to hit the country in 25 years. Winds of up to 135 miles per hour caused widespread destruction in the cities of Osaka, Kyoto and Nagoya.

According to a transport ministry official, most of the about 3,000 people stranded at the airport have been transported out, media reported on the morning of September 6. It is unclear when the airport, which operates over 400 flights a day, could be reopened.
