Penn Badgley stopped by Good Morning America yesterday, September 3, to talk about his new Lifetime series, You and his Gossip Girl days. He opened up about how he got into the creepy mindset of his new character and even confessed that he turned down his famous role of Dan Humphrey at first.
Talking to host Paula Faris, the 31-year-old said that his character, Joe, is “more than a little disturbed” as he uses social media to make a woman fall in love with him. In order to get into the zone to play such a dark and twisted person, he used pop music to get through. He said, “I listen to Michael Jackson and Prince to prepare for any and everything.”
The John Tucker Must Die star said that there was an MJ song called “Human Nature” that hit the spot and he realized it was “talking about a love that is so maniacal and obsessed.” From there he started to understand Joe as a person.
Penn also revealed that he turned down the part of Dan primarily because he wasn’t sure if the role was for him. Creators Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz were convinced that he was the perfect actor for the starring role and and wanted him to sign on. He said, “Now I am grateful and honored but it’s funny like I am still not sure what it is that they felt [about me].”
