Dissent is the safety valve of democracy without which the pressure cooker will burst. Those words of caution have come in from the Supreme Court. 24 hours after 5 activists, which include a lawyer, an editor and human rights activist were arrested following nationwide arrests and outrage from several quarters. A relief has been given by the apex court reminding every one of us that differing opinions which may be extreme left or extreme right do form the pillars of our democracy and all of us and most importantly the government and the police need to always keep in mind. But here is the problem while the courts are deciding the legality of the arrests of these 5 people, the Pune police believe they have incriminating evidence against these activists of their involvement, planning and even funding of sinister anti India activities, which brings us to ask the question, is this healthy dissent that’s being trampled upon or this a deliberate design to break our nation.
